Can legends Jaki Liebezeit and Irmin Schmidt are joined by Burnt Friedman and Jono Podmore for this delightful EP of rhythmic tribalism, with smart repetitive polyrhythms overlaid by the subtlest of melodic touches. The creeping melodies and skeletal rhythmic patterns are like dark minimal techno but with more organic drum sounds.
It’s a cerebral late night isolationist listen really and yet it’s also quite kinetic and groovy and in the right sort of uber-chilled environment it’d be pretty danceable. Phil’s saying it reminds him of ‘Soon Over Babaluma’-era Can when they went a bit techno in the mid-’70s and obviously Liebezeit & Friedman’s Secret Rhythms collaborations are worth mentioning as a reference point. Basically we’re talking the delicate rhythmic intricacy of Can mixed with the clean precision of minimal techno. Very nice.
