This Norwegian electronica super-kind has already amazed us with recent EPs 'Utrecht' and 'Questionmarks', the latter possibly still available from the label in America, the former sold out its two pressings on the amazing 030303 imprint in record time. Why? Because he's the latest in a long line of true braindance masters and his tracks are universally appealing, densely structured and hyper-funky but rooted in old-skool disciplines and inspiration. Classic old 3am rave, acid house and sharp soulful electro are Stian Gjevik's main fields of interest and he ploughs and tends to them with utmost diligence and care.
Along with the British contingent such as old head EDMX and new boys on the block Jodey Kendrick and David Monolith (Mrs. Monolith hates him being called Dave) this laddie has been churning out timeless-sounding tracks since the mid ‘00s, initially on lo-quality MP3, sometimes straight to tape and often under his other alias CN. Everything I've unearthed by him so far has been sublime, updating the greatest retro sounds and forging new aural worlds for an audience old and young.
His name is starting to filter into the larger arena now and the ever-canny Rephlex obviously have a considerably generous hand behind this release - a truncated 12" EP and a full CD album because, like us, they realise he's a genius keeping a very important flame alive. I don't think there's much in the way of digital input here...this is pure ecstatic analogue beauty from beginning to end. Volume 1 is completely stuffed with gorgeous melodies and a wonderful warm stargazing spirit, this EOD sounds like he's been making quality braindance for as long as the old boys! I love the quote from his press release where he says "I've been interested in music since I was born"...so sweet!
10/10 Gregor Omelasz Customer review, 18th February 2013
Both the 12" and CD are superb, I haven't been excited about anything within IDM/Acid for a long time. However, Stian (EOD) does it for me, he's made everything fresh again or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough! He's much more delicate than most Rephlex artists, but still fits right in all the same. He doesn't have an LP out (yet), but he does have several excellent 12" releases including Questionmarks and Utrecht, although the latter is OOP. The 12" itself has 3 (out of 6) which aren't on the CD, which leaves 7 tracks to explore on the CD itself, in other words, buy both before it's too late!
