- Atomium by Karl Bartos
Handily coinciding with Kraftwerk doing some gigs or something comes this paean to that weird building in Brussels that looks like a load of silver balls attached together with metal stanchions. It is the most extraordinary building. I remember as a child, my grandparents going on a rare sojourn out of Tyne and Wear to go to Brussels and bringing me back a photograph of the Atomium. I was spellbound. Like the Sydney Opera House it just seemed...impossible.
Karl Bartos has chosen to celebrate this feat of engineering with an extremely average piece of electronic music, one part ‘80s Kraftwerk, one part Metal Mickey with a guest spot from R2D2. It sounds like Flight of the Conchords’ ‘Robots’ with a hint of Neil Young’s ‘Trans’. All the sounds would have sounded dated in 1982 but that hasn’t stopped anyone else. At best, a guilty pleasure. On the B side you get the same track but in German which hardly affects it as you can barely make out the words anyway.
