I missed the boat on Okamotonoriaki’s debut ‘Telescope’ a couple of years ago, although I hear it was good, but now I get to review his new one ‘A Little Planet’ and try to get my head around this Japanese audio-visual artist’s astonishingly detailed and varied sound palette as he carves delicate passages of gently emotional, often uplifting electro acoustic bliss pop with no small amount of style. Cokiyu appears on one track, and it’s mastered by none other than Chihei Hatakeyama so it’s fair to expect quality here.

There’s a DVD included with three videos by Okamotonoriaki himself and one by TS Wendelstein but I can’t watch it in the office so I’m just reviewing from the CD album itself, and to be honest with you I’m finding it delightful. Beautifully balanced melodies and rhythms and a microscopic attention to detail are bringing to mind all kinds of characters; I guess it falls somewhere between Plaid and Message To Bears/J.R Alexander and Hood and Philip Glass and Chapelier Fou but without sounding all that much like any of those. You know what I mean, though - immersive and lovingly crafted electronic beats mixed with a kind of pastoral and human melodic bent and more than a handful of crystalline melodies. It’s very difficult not to like.
