9/10 Ant Staff review, 07 February 2013
I'd read in a Resident Advisor Interview that Blawan had been working with one of techno's old hands. The news of this Trade record on Works The Long Nights did come as a bit of a surprise but when you consider Surgeon has been caning a lot of his tracks it's not that difficult to join the dots.
This 4 track EP kicks off with the super grubby 'Half Nelson' with trademark Blawan indecipherable vocals and some super filthy production reminiscent of his Karenn tracks with Pariah. It's destined to cause mayhem on the dancefloor with its jackin' claps and big screeches.
The Amusingly titled 'Positive Neckline' is clearly identifiable as a Surgeon production, it has his style of groove written all over it although Blawan brings his idiosyncratic percussion flavour to proceedings and an additional layer of filth you wouldn't usually find in Surgeon's pristine production sound.
'Touch The Skin' has thumping and clattering drums, again obviously the hand of Blawan The Barnsley Bruiser, his roots as a drummer really give him an edge when it comes to the rhythms of most contemporary techno productions which can be rigid and predictable. He uses a refreshing rhythmic palate and framework throughout this and indeed a lot of his productions. The kick is ultra slamming while the gritty baseline recalls Tobias Schmidt from his Sativae era.
The final cut 'I Notice You All' has a nasty bubbling acid bassline, massive heavy booming drums, a vocal sample and a generally menacing vibe throughout that will tear the living shit out of a club with ease. This 12" is a big evil techno monster that will shred your fucking face off. I want to watch gurning faces get "THE FEAR" when these bombs are dropped. ESSENTIAL!!! Now when is Blawan gonna release 'Medulla Rhees' C'mon lad get on with it!!!
