9/10 Mike Staff review, 05 February 2013

Oh! Usually at this point in the week the review pile is an arid wasteland populated only by self-released lo-fi drone and experimental noise, but not this week! I’ve got to start my day with the marvellous new Pissed Jeans effort and now I’m getting stuck into this monolithic live recording from the mighty Bong. As you’d expect there’s a long track on each side, capturing their pummelling doom-drone dirges from a concert played in an appropriately spooky setting.

For those who haven’t been exposed to Bong already, the name is a bit of a clue. This lot perform churning stoner rituals centred around droning guitars, slow pounding drums, and some mystical touches courtesy of vocal chanting and a Shahi Baaja, a kind of modified and electrified Indian zither which fills out the sound with intoxicating swirls and twangs. It’s got the hazy weed-fuelled heaviness of Sleep mixed with the ritualistic otherworldliness of Master Musicians of Bukkake. Despite being a live recording this sounds great, too, and comes with a very cool 12”x12” screenprint of the front cover design to boot! Super.
