Way back in the day, people were just as affected by misery, death, disease, famine, atrocious weather conditions, idiots, romantic catastrophe, poverty, appalling television, useless supermarkets, horses, but instead of taking to twitter or facebook to moan about it they either shut up and got on with it, beat their spouse to death or turned it into song.
Here is one of those compilations that compiles a slew of the best bits of peoples on-record whining about stuff so that you don’t have to trawl through all the individual releases. It features tracks from The Carter Family and John Hurt alongside a load of names I’ve not come across before but generally fit in your sorrowful mountain folk genre with all the tracks recorded between 1927-43.
It’s all intimate and downtrodden, you can almost hear the crackle of the log fire you have lovingly stoked whilst you sit late at night, pyjama’d to the max, in a beautiful log cabin. It has that kind of feel. Lyrics about suicide, death, etc but delivered in a manner that somehow soothes the modern soul. I used to be waaay into this stuff, we all go through that stage I think, so if you are in the middle of it this will be a perfect purchase. Lovingly compiled and mastered.
