6/10 Ian Staff review, 24 January 2013
This is the second record I’ve heard this week that sounds a little like Mazzy Star, I guess they were a big influence on a lot of people, this has a bit more of a folk feel to it though and for a two piece they fill out their sound quite well, lots of drums and bass guitar with the added occasional autoharp and harmonium, the guitars are quite riffy in places especially on ‘The Dark Age’ and there’s some lovely slide guitar on ‘Ballad Of The Golden Hour’!
It’s all very straightforward singer songwriter stuff but with more of a full band feel to it, I would even say it has hints of The Smiths in there in places like on ‘Locusts’ and then ‘Minnewaska’ is a little sea shanty (or lake shanty as the lyrics suggest!), It’s a pleasant album from start to finish really, nothing too groundbreaking or outrageous but very nice all the same!
