6/10 Clinton Staff review, 01 February 2013

My enjoyment of this record is being marred by a heavy head cold. Through my still working ears it sounds like a whole heap of cockney fun but I have a cold. I’m sniffin’ and a snortin’ and a coughin’ and a sneezin’.

Cockneys eh? They know how to have a knees up. While opener ‘A Better Offer’ sounds like a cheery Subway Sect covering a Pogues slur-a-long ‘Cruel Brittania’ and sits in the strange midpoint between Syd Barrett and Chas & Dave. The Glitter Band influence is never far from the surface but ‘My Life as A Dog in a Pigsty’ shows that they can do Madness style pathos effectively on a budget.

‘And Even Now’ has the cheesiest organ intro and ‘disco’ bass. It’s somewhere between Art Brut and Black Lace. There are two albums’ worth of this stuff, it’s all over the bloody place stylistically. At times you get the impression that it’s a load of Londoners playing songs that might appeal to a handful of other Londoners. It has a certain Pulp-like charm that I’m sure has a cult appeal somewhere but the title is strangely apposite - it may appeal to some people but needs a bit of work to infiltrate yourself into their world.
