- The Deadly Spawn (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Michael Perilstein

Now I’m not going to sit here and pretend I’ve ever seen (or even heard of) Douglas McKeown’s 1983 low budget schlock-horror flick ‘The Deadly Spawn’, but this label Mondo did one of my favourite reissues of last year with their tasty gatefold pressing of Fabio Frizzi’s ‘The Beyond’ OST so I’m all ears here.
On the record, Perilstein takes his cues from Goblin and John Carpenter with a louche selection of brash atmospheric compositions packed with lurid ‘80s synth and guitar and in a well judged combination of understated synth-soul and lounge jazz alongside the expected horror-funk. I’m particularly enjoying the squelchy spook-fest of ‘Spawn Lake’ with all its weird squashed analogue whooshes and washes and a relentless staccato melody pushing it along, but this whole record is great!
If you like Carpenter, Frizzi, Goblin, Korzynski, Alain Goraguer’s ‘La Planete Sauvage’ score or David Newman’s ‘Critters’ soundtrack, you’ll be delighted with this one. Quite superb, and a great pressing in beautiful packaging to justify the eye-watering price tag. Don’t know about you but I’m buying one.
