This solo album from The Phantom Band’s Rick Redbeard has apparently been eight years in the making, gestating in his parents’ Aberdeenshire house until he was ready to quietly unleash it upon the world. And here it is, ten tracks of gently picked folk-pop with subtle, soothing arrangements centred around piano or guitar alongside his confident Scottish lilt for a mournful collection that’s got elements of early Alasdair Roberts, Tunng, Smog and Songs: Ohia about it.

Perhaps a little middle of the road in places but it’s sad and pretty and carefully constructed enough to keep you warm as you gaze wistfully out of the window cradling a tall whiskey on cold winter nights for years to come. He’s treading a well-worn path but I can’t fault the warm and understated execution.
