Ambient garage anyone? No wait...come back!! Haha, isn’t that what Burial has been doing for the last five years? The first track on here is kind of like, if Will Bevan went to Goa for a three month sabbatical and sat on the beach with a load of crusties who fed him tranquilisers and played him old Orbital records till his brain slipped out of his nose, then shipped him back to london, tiny dreads sprouting, eyes bereft of soul, hemp clothing in rags....this is what he’d come up with. It all sounds a little like that Clubroot fella too, the poor man’s Burial. I don’t like it sorry, the samples are too cheesy and it sounds a bit lame and derivative but there’s some nice bass tones and gentle panning production touches that sound swell on the track ‘To Be’.
Over the other side we have a fresh approximation of the stunning aural universe of Zero 7 or something. Soft acoustic guitars and 2-step beats with those murky soulful vocal snatches. It sounds like something off a Cafe Del Mar compilation from 15 years ago. Who are Apollo kidding? “One of the world’s leading up-and-coming producers”!?? I could recommend thirty better recordings rooted in the realms of ambient off the cuff right now than this. Don’t be fooled kids. This is nothing new and not remotely exciting, sorry. Pleasant in parts? YES - see the woozy lull of ‘Spiral’. Innovative? ....NO!! NEXT!
