Two of this Essex-based trio used to be in Beatglider, who our boss Phil once put out on his late great Jonathon Whiskey label. He says they played dead good indie/powerpop type stuff. Anyway, this is more of a folky, laid-back indie proposition, with keys, melodica and strings gently fleshing out the sound. It’s very slick and often veers towards Americana-flavoured AOR like a countrified Real Estate. I’m almost certain these chaps are into Neil Young.
It can meander a little in places but there’s some really nice tunes on here for those who are into lush Americana-indie type stuff like Calexico or Frightened Rabbit-style folk-pop. An instant highlight for me is ‘Doves Tail’ which comes over like a mixture of ‘Sea Change’-era Beck and Ella Guru. It goes on for ages too! 15 songs of prettiness! There’s a couple that maybe could’ve been trimmed to make for a more consistent and manageable album but it’s never objectionable and you’ll be glad for it on those long car journeys.
