- Teenage by Veronica Falls

If you haven’t wept uncontrollably for a while, get onto Youtube and look up the early Kirsty MacColl singles ‘They Don’t Know’ and ‘Terry’, both are magnificent slices of the most beautiful ‘60s influenced pop. The lead track on here ‘Teenage’ has something of the stacked harmonies and jangly guitars of prime-era Kirsty. Similarly the lyrics tread the same path of teenage romance seen through the withered eyes of a twenty something. It lacks, however a real punch, production touches that would elevate it into the stratosphere. In other words it is slightly wimpy, it needs more Brian Wilson and less Heavenly.
The flip reminds me of a great sketch on ‘The Fast Show’ years ago - ‘Indie Club’ - where a Lamacq-esque presenter goes into full on hyperbole about the great world changing indie group about to come on and when they appear they resemble The Beautiful South. As true then as it is now, the press and reviews bands like this tend to receive are way in excess of their abilities. It’s a nice slice of C86 maudlin indie jangle. Nothing more. The A side though is heading in the right direction.
