- Grandeur & Weakness by The North Sea

On the back of the sleeve of this record it says “The North Sea is Brad Rose. R.I.P.”, which got me worried for a brief moment that the Digitalis honcho and prolific noisemaker had met some kind of sticky demise after recording this collection, but thankfully a glance at the press release indicates that he is alive and well and it is just his North Sea project which is being put to pasture after this swansong LP.
It’s a highly detailed set of droney, noisy dark ambience, with slow repeated synth shapes, ominous churning clatters, disorienting polyrhythms, modular chirps and all manner of future-dystopian electronic business. It’s quite epic and almost cinematic in places, but never losing that undercurrent of gritty, visceral weirdness which keeps us transfixed. It’s like Bee Mask meets Blade Runner with a hint of Decimus. A fine note to end on.
