8/10 Clinton Staff review, 21 December 2012

No relation to Neil Diamond(s), this instead is the guy from The Unicorns, whom, it transpires from a glance at my font of all knowledge Wikipedia once played in a band with actor Michael Cera. Oddness.

This album lollops along in a vaguely guitar pop slightly psychedelic manner, recalling at some points Cardinal at other points Adam Green. After a strong opening theres a couple of so-so tracks that drift along in a fog of lethargy. The tracks are all mid-paced and its difficult on first listen to pick out any melodies that are either a) strong or b) would make you want to go back and have another listen. ‘Don’t Do Us Any Favours’ steps up the pace slightly, its rising melodies and disorientated vocals recalling Grandaddy. ‘In Dust We Trust’ lollops along, a mixture of electronics and guitars, whilst ‘The Vaccine’ is a mid-fi waltz that has a smidgen of Elliott Smith about it. It could be a grower this, it’s hard to tell, the relaxed approach to arrangements means that the songs drift by pleasantly if inconsequentially but who knows what treats a couple of more spins will bring out.
