- For Tomasz Sikorski by John Tilbury

I’ll make this a short(er) one, it’s a four-headed piano attack by an old respected British avant-garde ivory-smasher and forms a loving tribute to a fellow obscure, yet highly respected joanna abuser from Poland who sadly departed this Earth in 1988. Tomasz Sikorski would have only been 73 today had he remained with us which makes him even younger than the Spring chicken that is Mr. Tilbury.
This collection has sparse moments of silence, periods of near-tranquility, crashes of sudden drama, junctures that verge on psychotic melancholia or bristling tension, plus some absolutely gorgeous moments of reflection. You know, all that you’d expect from the more highbrow, abstract end of the scale. The solo piano, unfortunately, was never one of my most revered instruments - I even prefer skronking free-jazz saxophone these days - but there’s some thrilling dimensions and real drama to be derived from these interpretations spanning Sikorski’s period of service 1971 to 1984 and Tilbury is one of our unsung statesmen so if this is your pie, then get it eaten.
