8/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 17 January 2013
This is a strange release. A companion of sorts to Jane Weaver’s nautical progressive neofolk concept album ‘The Fallen By Watchbird’, it features all sorts of known faces offering collaborations and interpretations including Demdike Stare, The Focus Group with Susan Christie, Emma Tricca and Anworth Kirk to name but a handful.
The result is quite a varied album. It opens with a slow-burning spook out with Demdike Stare, then The Focus Group and Susan Christie keep things dark with their mysterious library tones before we get a proper song by way of ‘The Fallen By Watchbird’ Video Edit, a strangely pulsating krauty vocal number that’s very entertaining. As the album goes on we do get more vocal numbers, with Emma Tricca, Wendy Flower and Magpahi all offering their talents as well as a solitary solo track from Weaver herself which is most lovely.
Because of the rotating cast of characters it can be a bit of a difficult album to get a firm grasp on, but despite the styles ranging from smooth folk pop to spooky library weirdness to sparse, chilly ambience.
