8/10 Peter Hellicar Customer review, 8th May 2015
This album is going to last. Mostly because it's such a bonkers mix of all sorts of influence. It's a great example of guitar music finding it's feet and reclaiming the rave. I love how all over the shop it is. It's poppy as fuck but never will never catch the ear of the main stream which perversely makes me like it more.
There are loads of great tracks on this record. A few stand out moments and bits I can put my finger on.
From the first bars of On Blue Mountain I hear The Make Up all organs and preachy. It's a religious experience. Then it turns left and goes all Doctor Who. Then I find myself singing "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis? Then we are back to Ian Svenonius style wailings. Back to Dr Who.... you get the idea.
I heard "San Francisco" played in a hotel lobby in China. It was a surprise and i wasn't quite sure if I was hearing Foxygen in the Ritz Carlton. It was them and it sounded ace. Baring in mind that it was played during the break of a terrible crooning bar singer. San Francisco is a great sone. So pithy and the lyrics are so Cali. All lazy and lackadaisical. Great guitar work.
"Bowling Trophies" trophies has that live blues groove to it. All Doo wop and baggy drums.
Then you are into the lounge lizard synths of "Shuggle". This is a great example of the bands playful style. The end is well Jim'll Fix It (can I say that anymore?).
The lyrical delivery on the record is really fun. The grooves are exactly that. The band clearly enjoy the playing and move the music around in such great ways.
It sounds tight and live. Loose playing but with a natural flow.
I could go on. But I think you need to listen for yourself. It's a banger.

In a way, they're Ween for the 21st Century. You get the sense they won't stand still for long, and they're next album will probably be something of a departure from this. (er, correction, it is a departure from this) Boatloads of feeling, pop aesthetic and influences from all over the place. Infact, it's pretty fun playing 'spot the similarity' when listening to this. But it's just all so well done, you don't and shouldn't care that those 4 bars sound like Bob Dylan, etc....
