8/10 Andrew Customer review, 12th August 2014

Falty DL has been causing an increasing stir, his work on Planet Mu becoming increasingly accomplished, not least the Love Is A Liability long player that is increasingly looking like a classic in its genre. So what of the move to Ninja Tune? Well Drew is certainly in good company, alongside long time players in the bass game such as Amon Tobin as well as fellow young guns Slugabed, Raffertie and Leatherette. Things certainly looked good on Falty's debut for the label, the Atlantis ep.

This album kicks of with Stay I'm Changed a lovely deep house groove with Detroit type stabs giving this a sleeker, deeper sound than some of the slightly more twisted sounds he earlier produced. Next up She Sleeps adds the vocals of Ed Macfarlane, for another late night, deep house ballad that again interests with its superior production. Straight And Arrow is a highlight with Four Tet hypnotic beats and a looped vocal sample dropping in and out of the mix. Uncea and For Karme follow, both sounding similar to old Kenny Larkin with their deep slightly techy house.

Disc two commences with Finally Some Shit / The Rain Stopped. Another deep instrumental that draws you in with its repetitive beats and hypnotic rhythm. Kenny Rolls One (Larkin?) plays some jazzy keys over a bouncy rhythm track to create one of the light tracks on the album. Korban Dallas rounds of side 3 with a fairly driving deep number, putting me in mind of the sort of track Derrick Carter would play. Side 4 completes things with Reassimilate ghostly chant samples over a midpaced beat, followed by Bells a great piece that ebbs into a laidback vibe slightly at points whilst still managing to seem to build into quite a euphoric track with its high frequency melody maintaining even aftervthe beats have dropped away. The Love I Need rounds things of with a down tempo, almost hip hop tempo overlaid with nice vocal samples and a drifting groove, it wouldn't sound out of place on a St Germain album.

A varied, impressive debut album from Mr DL, you feel he could have a real classic, career defining album just round the corner.
