The excellent Mat Sweet, aka Boduf Songs, has a new album of his hushed late-night introspection on Southern on the heels of a droney offering to their Latitudes series. My first impression of this one is that it comes across as more ambitious than his previous outings in terms of arrangements, with ambitious opener ‘Fiery The Angels Fell’ pairs a tinny drum machine beat with some smooth guitar plucking for a lovely groove that reminds me of Thee More Shallows before some crunchy almost A Place To Bury Strangers-ish guitars muscle their way into the track in a brief smash-and-grab raid.
Elsewhere in ‘Song To Keep Me Still’, Sweet croons his own version of ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ alongside a solitary guitar as a soup of sci-fi noise slowly swells in the background. The electronic touches are ever-present, but thankfully they never threaten to crowd out the still, ominous space in which the songs reside. Yet more tasteful nocturnal miserablism from this master, then.

Mat Sweet aka: BODUF SONGS is one incredible dude. To sit back & listen to this music it is hard to believe that it is coming from a 'ONE MAN SHOW' After Collecting All 35 LATITUDE Pieces On The Southern Label I Then Went On To Expand This Collection Which Was No Easy Task ($$$$$) With The Likes Of Daniel O'Sullivan, Stephen O'Malley, Alexander Tucker, & Aidan Baker With All Of Their Side Projects Of Which Aidan & Mat Are Together In The "Infinite Light Ltd" I Highly Recommend Any Of The Boduf Songs Albums & Am Looking Forward To The Upcoming New LP. GOOD LUCK MAT...........Mike
