- Sushi by James Ferraro
9/10 Mike Staff review, 03 January 2013
Now our Li’l Biz has long sung the praises of big-haired pop culture vulture James Ferraro but she’s busy on the boxes today so it’s up to me, something of a Ferraro novice, to tackle his new one ‘Sushi’. Ferraro is a playful and irreverent production master, mixing crisp electronic beats with classy synths and clever, spare sampling to excellent effect for a giddy collage of cut-up, alien electronics and synths with lots of references to hip-hop, r’n’b and funk, I think I may even detect a slow, sleazy dubstep groove on penultimate track ‘Condom’.
I’m only on my second listen through but the stumbling, imaginative abandon and icy cool attention to detail is already perking me up quite nicely. It’s a hard record to write about because it throws in all sorts of tiny details from disparate sources and turns them into something woozy and broken and yet somehow alive and infectious and strangely familiar. A classy and fun electronic record.
