Wow. The best of this week’s three Fruits De Mer records was hiding, unreviewed in the stockroom when my eye wandered to its place on the shelf. To my utter surprise I saw that it contained a new unreleased track by the legendary Nick Nicely.
Being a long term fan of his remarkable 1982 near-hit ‘Hilly Fields’ and the recently issued ‘Elegant Daze’ comp, I had no idea that he was still recording. The track shows that he has lost absolutely none of his strange slant on late 1960s psych music, his determinedly lo-fi approach creates something quite remarkable and eerie. Despite being wildly more upbeat and guitar-led, it strikes me with the exact same feeling as ‘Hilly Fields’ and his other ‘80s gems.
The Bevis Frond produces a guitar slinging, Stonesy lollop, its hard not to be reminded of a more ramshackle Paul Weller. Anton Barbeau/Three Minute Tease do an ace wandering psych track full of trilling pianos, Ringo-style drum fills and Dukes of Stratosphear melodies, loses a mark by just going on 2 minutes too long. Finally Paul Roland comes on all Syd Barrett with clipped precise vocals erupting into a crashing chorus. Shut one ear and this could be one of the more whimsical offerings on ‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn’.
