This one is on Anton from the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s ‘A’ label and features Berliner Hakon Adalsteinsson shuffling his way through 10 overtly miserable country ballads with names like ‘Oh Lord, Let Me Die In Pain’, ‘I Don’t Believe In Love Anymore’ and ‘Now It’s Too Late’ as if he’s the bastard son of Leonard Cohen and Lee Hazlewood, with hints of Roy Orbison, the Jesus & Mary Chain and the aforementioned BJM.

The lyrical content is purposefully self-indulgently miserable, with a rumbly hangdog delivery, but there are touches of classic rock’n’roll balladry in here too and the tones and arrangements are often really affecting, with crooning vocals, Shadowsy grooves and a nice twangy surf reverb on the guitar in places, while elsewhere it’s straight Low-meets-Lambchop-style country sadness, but with a bit of that modern murk you also hear from the likes of King Dude (and a cheeky bit of uplifting Spiritualized-aping fuzz-gospel in ‘Jesus Why Can’t I Walk With You’). If you like wallowing in other people’s misery, look no further!
