You should never underestimate Darkstar. The shapeshifting group have released a series of albums that always seem to take their melancholy electro-soul sound into new territories. News From Nowhere saw the band decamp to West Yorkshire, away from the bright lights of London and to Richard Formby's dusty studio in Leeds to make an album full of broad brush strokes but also deeply personal.

Being a bit of a Warp Records geek I’m surprised that Darkstar have completely passed me by so bear with me on this one, News From Nowhere starts off with a couple of nice floaty ambient tracks and by track three ‘Armonica’ the vocals become more prominent, James Buttery’s voice really compliments the soft textures especially on ‘A Day’s Pay For A Day’s Work’ which is almost Beach Boys esque in melody, the playful keyboard sound on ‘Young Heart’s’ being very akin to label mates Plone or Plaid yet Darkstar are not your typical Warp artist!
‘News From Nowhere’ is rich in sound and sparse on rhythm. I feel like I’m expecting something more but it never arrives and I’m quite happy with that, sometimes It’s nice not to be overwhelmed by beats and squeaks and squelches, ‘You Don’t Need A Weatherman’ has a bit of a trancey vibe, almost like ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’ era Animal Collective, so It’s a bit of an interesting mix in all. Warp Records are very good at finding artists with something special to share with the world and I think this may become one of those classic Warp releases in years to come!
