6/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 21st February 2015
I'm always a bit wary of bands who get nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, I can't recall anything good that has won, and the list of nominees is rarely much better, Field Music and Laura Marling being the recent exceptions. Villagers do sound very much the kind of thing the Mercury Music Prize judges are after. This is quite good - a bit like Bright Eyes without the mawkishness. It's a mix of folk, folk-pop and worthy singer/songwriteryness. "My Lighthouse" is a nice low-key folky opener. Then there's "Waves" which builds to a raucous crescendo, like crashing waves. I believe it's that kind of thing that really makes the judges ears prick up. What sets this apart though, is there a genuinely catchy song, "Nothing Arrived". There isn't much more I love about it though - not the kind of album that makes me want to listen to again after it's finished, apart from "Nothing Arrived".
