- Bulb in dust by Jonas Fust
9/10 Mike Staff review, 06 December 2012
This very limited (only 99!) 7” from Swede Jonas Fust comes in a natty colour printed fold-out poster sleeve and a download and contains four tasty little experimental pop miniatures which mix hip-hop beats, dubby basslines, weird noisemaking and most importantly a handful of catchy melodies. I thought it would be hard work (when things are pressed in such limited runs I find myself assuming it must be because not many people want to hear it) but actually it’s really enjoyable, like a midpoint between PiL and Hype Williams maybe? I don’t know, it’s not as confrontational as either of those...it’s very hard to pin down.
The songs seem to run into one another seamlessly too, which is interesting I think. When the first side finished I was waiting for the second song to begin, and then the second side seems to pretty much pick up where that left off. The final track veers away from the formula a little with some playful sampling and weird light loopy beats but it’s still true to that drifty melodic post-dub aesthetic which Fust seems really to have nailed here, with a sound which seems instantly familiar and yet alien as well. Excellent single.
