8/10 Mike Staff review, 04 December 2012

This trio of noise-rocking lads are British but a brief internet search won’t tell me specifically where they’re from, so I’m going to say “London”. On this album the London threesome are sounding exactly like they were recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini some time between 1989 and 1992. Yes, that specific.

Think Rapeman, Big’N, Shorty, Mount Shasta, think Touch & Go, early Skin Graft...all those bands that were trying to be like a more bludgeoning version of Scratch Acid, which were ten-a-penny 20 years ago but much harder to come by nowadays. There’s a hard-grooving rhythm section, scratchy, trebly sheets of guitar and unhinged yelpy vocals, with the band rarely switching down from fifth gear over the all-too-brief half hour duration.

There’s no doubt that this music is derivative and original ideas are in short supply, but it’s derived from something I think kicks ass so I’m in favour. I bet they’re heaps of fun live. If you dislike the proto-grunge noise rock of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, you’re sure to hate this.
