I just listened to half this ruddy album before I realised it’s supposed to be played at 45rpm and not 33. I just thought it was really slow pop-drone stuff. That’s what listening to ambient records for a living does to you. Now that I’m listening to it at the correct speed I can hear that it’s a most melodious mix of casual guitar twinkle and rumbling, crackling drones and other crafty tape manipulations from Barn Owl’s talented Jon Porras.
Porras is clearly aiming straight at our bliss centres with this one, a fluid, languid of somnolent treated guitar twinkles and new age drones, layering growling feedback with celestial synths, which are minimal, melodic and focused and while droney in places don’t outstay their welcome. It does get quite loud in a couple of places with heavily layered rumbling or hi-gain string buzzing, but it never feels overbearing or confrontational.
This seems like a great record to wind down with at the end of a long day. I wish I could afford to take it home and do just that but I just spent all my money on that amazing ‘The Deadly Spawn’ soundtrack repress. So many great records that I can’t afford them all, that’s my problem.
