- The Pentaki Slopes by Kangding Ray

This is totally my kind of techno. Built around a wicked metronome bassline, a warm slamming kick and some woozy panning/trippy ricocheting, this opener of ‘The Pentaki Slopes’ is called ‘North’ and is one of the most delectable pieces of crisp minimal astral techno I’ve had the fortune to hear this decade. It fills me with this profoundly peaceful euphoria that only the finest electronica manages to do. ‘Plateau’ is a slower, more pondering stalker of a track that with its measure of stealth and lightly effervescent, wistful and inquisitive keys could soundtrack a certain still-to-be-imagined short suspenseful film. The creepy pitched down indecipherable vocal that comes in half-way is rather unexpected.
Closing with the epic ‘South’ (which resembles a longer, more intense VIP re-fix of ‘North’) this EP cements itself as one of the years most excellent and mercurial techno releases. Here a driving deep 4/4 builds gradually in the mix whilst a style of implicit trance-shimmer weaves around a whole barrage of purring, grinding meteoric synthesis. This tune is bursting with hypnotic energy and rhythmic tension and has real integrity and purpose. Honestly, If I’d not already submitted my annual top 20, this record would be in there, no shit.
