9/10 Ant Staff review, 30 November 2012
This is Matteo Ruzzon’s second album following the somewhat desirable debut on Morphine Records. I’ve been looking forward to getting to grips with this one since it was announced and pictures of test pressings appeared online. This NYC producer has a pretty idiosyncratic take on skewed house and mashed techno. I’m not entirely sure his sound fits into either techno or house, it’s kinda out there on its own really which can only be a good thing. There’s all sorts of grotty codeine beats lo-fi rumbles, samples, strange loops, snippets of hip-hop and R&B vocals, crackles, warbling digital birds, spooked synths, fucked up broken rhythms, dreamy loops. It’s all kinda gloomy and druggy sounding and totally hits the spot.
Always great to hear artists doing their own thing and working outside the loop. With guys like Madteo, Jamal Moss, Kassem Mosse, Morphosis, L.I.E.S etc. all doing great things at the moment I feel it’s an exciting time for underground electronic music. Recommended.
