This new CD from Maia comes in fancy embossed packaging in metallic gold, silver or bronze with space-themed Maia postage stamps. A really beautifully packaged compact disc, and in a “limited” first run of 1,000 so I guess you’re gonna have to hurry if you want one of these.

As for the music, the main influence seems to be a folky singer-songwriter one but there’s enough variety to keep you guessing as they throw in touches of smooth funk and soul, occasional brass and some experimental psychedelic touches which occasionally drag it into Fruits De Mer type territory. I’m pretty sure he just sang “Hypnotist, blow me a coin/ Now we’re ready for tenderloin”...what does that even mean?

Our sorely missed review master Dave described their previous offering as a “folk opera”, and I kind of see that here too...they’re quite adventurous with their arrangements whilst still keeping the same sleepy-cool aesthetic throughout. It’s quite charming but hasn't really bowled me over.
