- The Language Of Flowers by Twigs & Yarn
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 22 November 2012
I’ve just spent an hour trying to file away this weeks releases. Can I just ask something, nicely? Can people stop releasing records please? A good percentage of them are utterly pointless and are taking up space in our stock room. The truth is that Phil only stocks most of them out of pity. Also records have got fatter and wider (just like the population) so we can’t squeeze as many into the space. Its the same with me and scones. Has my stomach shrunk or something? Two scones and I’m anybody’s. Anyway all that digression has given me chance to take in the pleasant slimline sounds of Twigs and Yarn. They produce scattershot electronic music made out of bits of string, sellotape, glue and chopped together with some fine embroidery scissors.
Its all fine and light like a particularly flyaway meringue. Without even looking at the sleeve notes I thought to myself ‘Japan’ and as well as being on a Japanese label one of these lot lived in Japan for a bit. Think: The Boats, Aus, Part Timer. A lot of it is pretty clicks & cuts but sometimes a nice acoustic guitar will strum away, keeping itself busy. Sometimes it veers into Colleen style twinkles and you are left with the sound played in an infants room as you desperately try to get it to sleep. Sometimes there are disembodied voices coming in and out of the mix. Intoxicating at times and very pretty.
