- God Damn You Mountain by Seamus Fogarty
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 21 November 2012
I need to go up to Anstruther, home of Fence Records, just to see what it’s like. I have no excuse not to go, it’s just up the coast somewhere, right? Fence seems to have been going for a long, long time and is still somehow releasing music that fits in perfectly with its aesthetic and is of high quality.
This Seamus Fogarty chap is the archetypal Fence artist. A windswept man who sounds like he’s spent a lot of time near the sea. He has a nasal, folky voice that could grate if it wasn’t for the lushness of the music he surrounds himself with. Armed with an acoustic guitar, played in scattershot manner, he adds...well...bits of everything really, banjo, strings, synthy sounds and the most beautiful violin you are ever likely to hear.He uses unconventional song structures with quirky narrative that keeps things interesting and varied throughout, one song features an old Irish washerwoman banging on about chimneys - a truly inspired touch. Not always an easy listen, there is always some detritus being thrown into the mix somewhere but it successfully straddles a very neat line between traditional inspired folk, the more straight songwriter qualities of the King Creosote brigade and cosy late night fireside yarns. Very impressive.
