Here’s a split EP from the reliable Italian Beach Babes which pairs up analogue babe Meddicine with hypno-fuzzers Vision Fortune whose cassette debut so impressed us a few months ago. Apparently the Meddicine side showcases a warmer and more approachable side to her dark and damaged synth aesthetic but since I’ve not heard any of her previous stuff I’ll have to take their word for that. Her songs on here are really good though, minimal synthpop with great vintage tones, monotone vocals and a slight coldwavey feel driven by patient mechanical beats. I hope it’s not the last I hear of her because I’ve really enjoyed this side.
Over we’ve got The Vision Fortunes of course, sounding a little more patiently-paced and less lo-fi than they did on the tape and kind of coming across like a midpoint between krautrock godfathers Can and the earthy, mystical repeato prog of Mugstar. It’s really heady, hypnotic stuff with much less fuzz and noise than I expected, just patient, head-nodding grooves anchored by sweet, simple rhythm section lines. The closing track has some weird chopped up static at the end but that’s as noisy as it gets really. Apparently these guys have got an album on Gringo on the horizon which was produced by Hooklord MJ. Anyway I like both sides of this 12”, it’s soothing, repetitive and smooth.
