I’ve not heard of Brolin before but this was mastered by Leeds character Tom Woodhead so I guess he’s/she’s/they’re not from too far afield. Neither the sleeve nor the press release are really giving anything away though, and even his website offers no substantive information about this shadowy entity.

As for the single itself, ‘NYC’ is a downbeat bit of slightly mumbly falsetto piano soul with tasteful xylophone twinkles. It’s very nice, sounds like something from the ‘80s that I can’t place. Think Michael Kiwanuka meets The National at Jamie xx’s house and you’re probably on the right lines though.

On the flip ex-Yeasayer Sinkane takes things into dark, almost dub-techno kind of territory with the vocal line still wandering defeatedly around the scattered remnants of the song. Some tasteful finger-clicks are my favourite bit. Weirdly enough I’m enjoying the remix much more than the original, but if you’re into miserablist late-night techno-pop you might really enjoy this.
