- The Sea Road by Robert Macfarlane & Chris Watson
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 22 November 2012
“Listen, listen now. Listen now to the songs of the googamen.......the burbling puffins........”. This is a collaboration between author Robert MacFarlane and sound recordist Chris Watson. This is a recording of a performance piece based on Robert’s book The Old Ways that blends archive audio, field recordings and spoken word. Watson creates evocative seaside sounds, waves crashing on shores, seagulls and eerie crashing sounds which sit perfectly under the spoken word. MacFarlane’s spoken word is much more effective than the DrCarlsonAlbion abomination we reviewed earlier in that it has a soothing effect whether you are listening to the words or not. A very evocative piece, very lengthy, has the same effect as listening to the shipping forecast on Radio 4. The B side features the excellent sound work created by Chris Watson sans words. Difficult to ‘review’ as such but no-one has threatened to throttle me for playing it this time
