Raw Thrills, aka Greatest Hits’ Zak Mering, is back with his second album of adventurous bedroom weirdpop, squeezing an astonishing 16 experimental, psychedelic nuggets of louche melodic fun onto a single plastic disc for your home listening convenience.

I didn’t pay all that much attention to his last one since these things can easily get lost in the noise when you work somewhere like this, but now I’ve got a chance to sit down and have a proper listen to his new one and I have to say it’s very nice. Mering is mixing classic ‘60s psych/garage pop styles - I’m definitely feeling touches of Syd Barrett, The Byrds, even shades of the Beatles in places - with a spontaneous freewheeling synthy slacker lo-fi feel a la buddy Ariel Pink (who indeed has written the song ‘Daddy Don’t Go’ on here). The songwriting is quite simple and repetitive but playful and lively with it and completely packed with quality melodic hooks. Sometimes it’s making me think of a more lo-fi, casual take on the modern psychedelia of the likes of Connan Mockasin. Really nice stuff.
