8/10 Clinton Staff review, 22 November 2012
On the whole, I’m a misery guts. Whining about this, whingeing about that and if doing neither of those things then grumbling about something completely different. Therefore I was very surprised to find myself, against convention, enjoying the opening tune on this LP. They play what is described as ‘bent techno’ I don’t think they mean ‘gay’, I think they mean lopsided. The bass drum thumps along convincingly whilst squeaks that resemble a 1 second sample of a kettle boiling are interspersed between the low end thumps. Everything squeaks and rattles like an ageing train rattling along some lonesome pennine track. There is a real train like feel of the track as it bounds along, seeming to gain momentum at certain points becoming incredibly intense.
The remainder of the side is rhythmic dark techno moving along nicely but without the ‘headcleaner’ qualities promised by the press release. The flip opens with DAF-like pounding dark-tech before closing track ‘Refract’ which belts along at a fair rate of knots with burbling synths giving way to distortion creating an insanely warped distorted techno interspersed by pounding percussion ending up with a head churning noise which has left my brain begging for it to end.
