The great Not Not Fun have this 12” (which the lovely people at the distributor strangely sold to us as an LP) from Profligate, which as I gather from the press release is the new stage name of Noah Anthony, who has previously recorded as Night Burger. I can see why he opted to switch.

Anyway on this platter there’s two lengthy 45rpm dark techno pumpers. Videotape slowly builds layers of ominous synth melodies, deft sequencer touches, and murkily pulsating electronic rhythms into a jittery, paranoid and yet strangely danceable piece that comes over a bit Sandwell District but there’s something exuberant and fun about it too. Halfway through it drops back to an echoing bass drum pulse before building back up to some some more ecstatic synth layers, this time with a bit of a John Carpenter feel to the pedal note electropulses.

On the other side there’s ‘Conditioning Trench’, which has hushed vocals and buzzy synths for a bit of a coldwave feel, but still with that sparse techno edge as well. There’s a very satisfying crunchy beat which drops halfway through, followed by some fairly lively synth action. I think of the two I’m having the most fun with this track, but both are good.
