8/10 Mike Staff review, 15 November 2012
Cosmic harmonium dronesmith Jaime “Mind Over Mirrors” Fennelly (also of Peeesseye and Acid Birds) is back with his third LP in two years, ‘Check Your Swing’, and this time round he seems to be heading into more of an astral analogue synth territory than his previous outings, which if my memory serves me correctly focused more on processed harmonium drones, although the harmonium is still clearly present here. The first side is largely slow, melodic, shimmering ambience with smooth, soft synthetic tones underpinned by blurred, swirling drone melodies, although when you flip it ‘Second Nature’ does take a brief venture into harsh, buzzy two-note endurance drone territory before taking us into space on a busy, bloopy ride that recalls Bee Mask in playful mode, and the rest of the side in general does have a more adventurous, abrasive feel than the first, reminding me of Emeralds in places, but without losing its patient, peaceful composition. Overall it’s totally immersive and mostly relaxing stuff from one of the more skilled droners around right now.
