Here’s the new single from Cat’s Eyes’s Rachel Zeffira, and it also features members of TOY and S.C.U.M so we’re talking serious Lahndaaahn scene cred right here. Here’s the new single from Cat’s Eyes’s Rachel Zeffira, and it also features members of TOY and S.C.U.M so we’re talking serious Lahndaaahn scene cred right here. It’s confusingly labelled as being 33rpm, but it sounds really bloody weird at that speed so I’m going with the much more palatable 45 option.

On the A side ‘Here On In’ is a spooky bit of pop with a throbbing bassline and ethereal backing drones from vocals and violin and weird hypnotic spidery repeato guitar shapes. I hate to mention her because it makes it sound like I don’t like this, but it’s got a bit of a Lana Del Rey feel to the wistful slow-burning smoothness. Thankfully nowhere near as heavy-handed and crappy as LDR though.

Flip it and she’s covering My Bloody Valentine’s To Here Knows When, stripped down to a piano ballad with blurred, drifty vocals and tasteful violin, forming a gradually swelling crescendo. It’s all very dreamy and tasteful and different enough from the original to be worthwhile, what with the total lack of guitars and all. I thought I’d hate it ‘cause there’s certain bands nobody should cover but actually it’s okay.
