What we have in our warm, clammy hands is an album featuring a slew of new compositions for string quartet by ambient master Harold Budd. These are minimal, sometimes melodic, sometimes atonal compositions featuring gorgeously played violins, violas and cellos. Each chord stretched out almost to breaking point with a gallic-sounding flair exemplified in titles like ‘Nicolas Poussin Near 29 Palms’. Beautifully recorded, it’s true chamber music with swooping cellos and haunting motifs.

Being honest, a record of this nature deserves a write up by a classical expert rather than us pop lads, it’s full of nuances and subtleties that although washing my ear with pleasant tone, I am simple not qualified to attempt to describe. Truly gorgeous music, though, the man still has it in spades, wonderfully minimal, no extraneous sounds, late night classical melancholy of the highest order.
