8/10 Brian Staff review, 09 November 2012
Fucking weird twelve from the one half of Fuck Buttons that didn’t do that ambient album on Mogwai’s label. One side ‘Billowed Wind’ is pretty abstract stumble-core/awkward-tech with a monging throaty loop and a sawing synth judder. Then there’s a strange Animal Collective-esque vocal wail to contend with. I can’t decide if it is totally amazing or gratingly awful which means it is nothing if not interesting and original. There’s a bit of a breakdown then the tune drunkenly trips back into your face with some weird ships foghorn effect and a spot of mild pitch-shifting. An intriguing mess that really sounds like fuck-all else around right now. What drugs is this man on?‘Stumbling Room’ has the same style feral vocal which takes on a kind of tortured Robert Smith tinge whilst the tuneage resembles this sort of deconstructed, mildly glitched technoid/garage-style stagger with industrial fluffing and a brilliant fractured groove. Two sides of a similar coin, which, like I said, is gonna really divide people. He hasn’t taken the easy route and for that he is to be commended. The last few minutes of this superior side have that classic evil rave sludge hoover sound from the early ‘90s married to a that cool stunted beat - I’d absolutely kill to see what this did to a dancefloor in some poser club.
