We’ve got two reissues in from this new Captured Tracks offshoot Body Double this week, I just reviewed the excellent one from Californian post-punkers Blissed Out Fatalists and now I’m getting stuck into early-’80s Californian post-punkers Half Church’s collection.

The immediate obvious influence is The Clash post-London Calling but if this was made in ‘80-’86 I guess that’d make them contemporaries rather than imitators. Later on things get more spacious and dubby, bringing to mind Joy Division and Magazine, as well as a little bit of PiL. The bass sound is clean and trebly and percussive while the guitars fizz away in the background and the vocals are clear and slightly snotty. It’s very good but does sound a bit more dated than the Blissed Out Fatalists one did. Then again, calling something made in the early ‘80s “dated” is hardly an insult really.
