I don’t know a lot about this duo, but apparently Mark Dall and Alex Ander have previously brought out records on Blackest Ever Black under the name Young Hunting and the name change “reflects a new clarity and conviction to their work”.
Anyway, now the introductions are out of the way, ‘You Don’t Know What You Want, Do You’ opens with a sleepy two-note synth refrain over a head-nodding techno beat, and over its (relatively lengthy) duration there’s plenty of buried little speech samples, ominous minimal synth work and subtle drones. It’s proper tasteful, kind of like something off the last Boards of Canada album but with a bit of an Italo-horror feel. Classy, old-fashioned late night goodness.
Flip it and we’ve got ‘Success Is Her Sensuality’, which is shorter and more ominous, with some shimmering hi-drones, pulsating beats and insidious melodies. It’s also good but as with so many singles I like the A side more.
