We’ve had a couple of these guys’ records in before from HoZac but I’ve never found time to check them out so this is my first exposure to Chicago’s Heavy Times and I have to say that I’m very impressed. On these three tracks here they combine a knack for bright and intuitive melodies with great fuzzy punk guitar tones and deep, stony vocals for a driving and effective garage pop single.

They seem to have one singer with a super deep voice and one with a less deep voice and they share the vocals roughly 50/50 with Mr Low dominating the A side and Mr High taking charge on the flip. As a result the A side has a brooding Joy Division/Bauhaus/Sisters of Mercy thing going on with the spindly one-note guitar leads also recalling JD while the rhythm section blasts tight and fast more along the lines of Marked Men or Eddy Current Suppression Ring; and even more so when the other guy sings on side B. All these songs are good, due in no small part to the knack these guys have at dishing out mega-catchy hooks without being all cheeseball about it. I’m gonna have to check out their album now.
