- Heal by The Child Of Lov
The Child of Lov is a mysterious, reclusive youngster who started recording his own unique brand of bedroom soul-funk at the age of 15. Now in his early twenties, he’s preparing to finally drop his debut album, which features contributions from the likes of Damon Albarn, Thundercat and DOOM, so that’s exciting, hey?On this single, lead track ‘Heal’ is a technicolour whirlwind of fuzzy textures, funky beats, rough-around-the-edges husky soul singing, nattily arranged backing vocals and a tasty touch of wah-guitar for good measure. On the flip he covers D’Angelo’s ode to mother’s ruin ‘One Mo’ Gin’, turning it into an alien r’n’b shuffle with slow, heavy grimy beats and weird squiggly filters on the vocals. It’s pretty rude. Given that I’m always a little wary of hype records, this single is better than I expected. Let’s hope the album lives up to this promise.
