LA-based experimental pop duo IO Echo’s debut EP is here, although prior to this they have already scored Harmony Korine and James Franco’s collaborative film ‘Caput’ and curated a music and arts festival in their city’s MOCA! Not a bad start.

Anyway, this EP opens with the frankly bizarre ‘Shanghai Girls’, which mixes doom-dirge guitar blasts with bright synthpop touches which poke out of the crackling grime like Jesu and Passion Pit playing at the same time. On the other side ‘Ministry Of Love’ sounds like the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine mixed with the bassline of The Cure’s ‘Fascination Street’, it’s plangent but hazy, and quite epic-sounding. The whole five-song EP has this epic feel, mercifully tempered with a noisy and experimental bent. If you like your experimental pop cavernous-sounding, check this out!
