- Waiting For This To Happen / Glistering by Minny Pops

Having run out of English and American bands to reform we are now looking to Holland and obscure long forgotten Factory outfits to fulfill the quota. It has to be reiterated that Minny Pops are nothing to do with the bizarre ‘mini-pops’ programmes of the early ‘80s where children were encouraged to dress and sing as their favourite pop stars to the delight to the horror of parents everywhere. Minny Pops were actually rather respected in their day, their debut single was produced by Martin Hannett and they shared stages with Joy Division and all the others.
I was deeply concerned as to what this single would sound like but it is in fact rather good. Despite being recorded in 2012, it sounds like it was made in a dank Manchester studio in 1981. Vocals are deep, guitars spindly and drums sound like drum machines; the best bit is the guitar that comes in for the main ‘hook’ sounding not unlike Joy Division at all.
On the flip theres something equally dark and mysterious with eastern-sounding guitars which slash away effectively. A little bit like Magazine I’m thinking. A good return, then, and nice to see Tim Burgess doing his bit for resurrecting ancient ‘80s obscurities. Next stop: Crispy Ambulance.
